A former company director reveals they worked on the game that many still dream of
Have you ever dreamed of the definitive Harry Potter video game? Well, it seems that years ago at Electronic Arts they did too, since it has just come to light that they worked on an ambitious MMO of the Wizarding World . And I’m not talking about something that happened a couple of years ago huh, all this goes back to the early years of the 2000s.
During an interview that took place in one of the broadcasts of the streamer The Real Brandalorian , Kim Salzer, former director of product marketing at EA , said that he worked on a large project that was never finished. It was about this Harry Potter MMO.
EA took no chances … and it was a bad move
Salzer commented that in the early 2000s, when Electronic Arts owned the rights to make Harry Potter video games, they became very involved in the development of this title. ” We did all the documentation, we made a beta version, and it featured a combination of offline and online elements in which it was possible to send gifts to the players by post , such as prizes, ribbons and more.” stated the former director.
After researching thoroughly, Kim Salzer was fully convinced that this Harry Potter MMO would be a success, but Electronic Arts ended up backing down because they distrusted the longevity of the franchise . And when he said this, this former employee was referring to the fact that the company was going through a process of important changes, and they did not believe it convenient to gamble so much on an IP that it could be forgotten in a couple of years .
Clearly this was a serious mistake, since thanks to the Warner Bros. film saga, Harry Potter became a global phenomenon that is still as alive today as it was 20 years ago . We will never know what it would have been like to play such an ambitious MMO, but at least we have the trump card of Hogwarts Legacy, the candidate to become the definitive video game of the Wizarding World created by JK Rowling.
