The production of the Madrid studio MercurySteam and Nintendo becomes the second best-selling game in the saga, but with figures far from other great Nintendo series.
Metroid Dread , the long-awaited and long-awaited Metroid 5 that Samus Aran fans have been waiting for since 2002, has sold 2.74 million units between its premiere on October 8 and December 31, 2021. The data comes from the financial results from Nintendo in the third quarter of fiscal 2022.
The co-production of Nintendo and the Madrid studio MercurySteam has become the second best-selling game in the series . It sits just above the first Metroid and a step away from Metroid Prime , which Retro Studios developed for the Game Cube. No Metroid has surpassed 3 million copies and a title as beloved as Metroid: Zero Mission did not even reach a million with its approximately 840,000 copies. According to the estimation of VGChartz the best sellers of the series are:
- Metroid Prime – 2.84
- Metroid Dread – 2.74
- Metroid – 2.73
- Metroid II: Return of Samus – 1.72
- Metroid Fusion – 1.60
- Super Metroid – 1.42
- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption – 1.41
- Metroid: Other M – 1.36
- Metroid Prime 2: Echoes – 1.10
- Metroid Prime Hunters – 1.08
- Metroid: Zero Mission – 0.84
Remasters and reissues outperform Dread
However, the forecasts that perhaps this installment would elevate the saga beyond its related fans have not been fulfilled at the moment. The argument around that speculation was on two pillars: almost everything that comes to Switch sells a lot and the metroidvania genre is more popular than ever. In addition, it was released on the same day as the OLED model of the hybrid console.
Other Nintendo games released in the last quarter of 2021 that have surpassed Metroid Dread are Mario Party Superstars , which reaches 5.43 million copies, and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Glittering Pearl with 13.97 million . Last year, reissues and remasters like Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (8.55) and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD (3.85) also outsold metroidvania .
Although Metroid Dread is a success within the series, not even on the popular Switch has it managed to achieve the status of Zelda and Mario that many players assume. Perhaps the situation will change with Metroid Prime 4 , announced in 2017 to great fanfare, but its development was restarted in 2019 and it has no release date.
