Todd Howard, creative director of Bethesda’s new space adventure, comments that the combat pacing and combat energy management in Starfield are inspired by MechWarrior and FTL.
Todd Howard , creative director and executive producer of Bethesda Game Studios, assures in a recent interview shared by PC Gamer that Starfield’s space combat mechanics are inspired by MechWarrior and FTL . This ambitious open world set in outer space, which will have more than 1,000 explorable planets and a campaign between 30 and 40 hours , will have a space combat system in which energy management and shooting will be vital to our survival . Howard details it in the following statements:
” We keep the pace fairly slow, One of the games that I love that we sort of look at for pace is MechWarrior, believe it or not. Like, that’s probably a little bit slower but in terms of systems and power and being able to line things up, it’s a little bit faster than that, but you know what I mean,” said the creative. ” Your ship has various power systems ,Little bit of FTL there in terms of putting how much power into three different weapon systems, and then your engines, and shields, and the grav drive is what lets you jump, and sort of get out of some situations that you have to put power to.” he added. This space combat system that Howard describes can also be found in titles like Star Wars: Squadrons or Elite: Dangerous.
